Gmail Mobile App Certificate Error

Today when I downloaded and installed the Gmail Mobile App on my Sony Ericsson K600i I came across the following:

Certificate Error
Sorry, the Gmail mobile app will not work on your phone. Your phone doesn’t have the appropriate certificate to communicate with Gmail. Try accessing Gmail on your mobile browser at http://m.gmail.com

Slightly annoyed, I went and checked the certificates installed on the phone [under:  Settings ->Connectivity  -> Internet Settings -> Security ] here is what it had:

Trusted cert.
VeriSign WTLS
Baltimore WTLS
Entrust WLTS
VeriSign
Entrust
GlobalSign
Thawte
GTE Cyber Trust Root

Java Certificate
Sony Ericsson
Thawte Pemium
GeoTrust CA for UTI

So that explained it, because as per the Gmail mobile app requirements, I need to have the Verisign Class 3 public certificate with serial number 70:BA:E4:1D:10:D9:29:34:B6:38:CA:7B:03:CC:BA:BF installed.

That certificate is available for downloading from https://www.verisign.com/cgi-bin/support/rootcert/getrootcert.cer. On your PC, if you do a “Save Target link as” and save the certificate you can verify the serial number of the certifcate by opening it; just to make sure its the correct one.

There are several ways to get this installed it,

1)Typing www.verisign.com/cgi-bin/support/rootcert/getrootcert.cer directly in the phone’s web browser.

2) Download the certificate to the PC and transfer it to the phone using either the data cable, IR or Bluetooth. If you’re planning on using the data Cable, remember that you should drop the file into the root directory in the “Sony Ericsson File Manager”.

After getting the certificate installed, if you now go and check the “Trusted Cert.” menu, the certificate would be listed as “Class 3 Public Primary Certifica”.
Sometimes you may need to switch off and on your phone, but that’s it.

Now time to check my email, I mean gmail!

I also had problems on my phone SonyEricsson V800 but I solved it in the end. I can tell you that the app is great and very fast; it has that old Google look. Everything is great but if you have other accounts like Hotmail, or Yahoo mail you will have to install another mail app. I use Movamail http://movamail.com/ for all of my mail accounts including Gmail.

Thanks for the link Nelly, MovaMial does seems a good option for checking Yahoo, Hotmail, GMail, AOL, POP3 and IMAP email accounts. But since I’m only using Gmail at the moment, the Gmail mobile app would do for now.

But for those who are interested:
    * MovaMail is free to try for 30 days
    * $2.95 US per month thereafter, billed through premium SMS.
    * Address Book Integration and Synchronization
    * Camera Phone Support [and Image Attachments]
    etc.

The easy way is to use a short link like tinyurl and use that to enter install the certificate. Took me 30 sek to make it work
